Flaminia OS
Designed as a master degree thesis with the supervision of Stefano Mandato, Luciano Perondi and Luigi Farrauto
Flaminia OS is an opensource project started in reaction to the chaotic and poorly designed Italian road signage system. The idea is that tests in real-life conditions are the only way to validate the design of a font for signage and that the final design should always derive by those experiments.
Flaminia OS is a typographical system that allows its users and its future designers to quickly interpolate (through the use of four Multiple Master axes) different variants of the letters according to the test results; by allowing minimal changes of only one variable in the letter shapes, Flaminia also provides a tool to study which are the most relevant factors in the process of reading signs, and can be used free of charge for future researches done in this field.
If you would like to read more about Flaminia OS (Italian only, sorry), or contribute to the project by downloading and developing the typographic system (in Fontlab .vfb format), here is the link to download the full package!
